Podiatry and chiropody

  • Colin Papworth
  • Alistair Clark
  • Julie Trudgill

Colin graduated from the Durham School of Podiatric Medicine in 1999. His first podiatry position was with Kensington and Chelsea PCT in central London, where he was able to experience all aspects of podiatry including community health centres and more specialised clinics in the local hospitals. These included diabetes, rheumatology, HIV and working in physiotherapy outpatients. He was able to offer biomechanical input into these clinics but also gained a valuable understanding of the nature of the different conditions that the patients have to endure on a daily basis. Other aspects of his work included working in the in-house orthoses manufacturing laboratory, organising and carrying out training days and setting up and being involved in a joint podiatry, Physio and osteopath multidisciplinary clinic to try to reduce waiting times to orthopaedic clinics.

In 2003 Colin moved to work in Holywell Healthcare and took on most of the biomechanical treatments as well as offering all the other aspects of podiatry and chiropody. The biomechanical service that Colin offers at Holywell Healthcare provides gait analysis and the supply of orthoses for English Institute of Sport at Sheffield and Loughborough, Ministry of Defence, British Olympic Association and Bolton Wanderers FC. Colin has also developed close links with local physiotherapy and chiropractic clinics to offer these clinics a gait and biomechanical analysis service. This involves a different podiatric approach and uses mainly premade orthoses to complement the treatment being provided by the referring clinician. It is only when we all feel we are at a suitable point that the patient is offered a custom orthotic. This is a very interesting way of working and patients who want to return to sports often benefit from this graduated approach to orthoses rather than a custom made model right from the start.

He was involved with Greg Quinn from Talar Made in having a role to play in the development of the Talar Made Premade orthoses and the making of the 3 Point Pivot training DVD and course. Colin presents this training day for both Talar Made and Physio-med. Other aspects of his work include providing podiatry support for three Military of Defence Regional Rehabilitation Centres and offering one day lower limb biomechanics training days.

Colin was involved in the staff buy-out of Holywell Healthcare in March 2008 and is now one of the directors.

Alistair has been in practice for over 30 years, during this time teaching podiatry and working in private practice. Alistair has worked with many different sports including runners of all standards and professional football clubs in the premiership and championship. He has considerable experience in gait analysis and orthotics and has prepared many people for everything from the London Marathon to triathlons. He also has an interest in gait problems in children and its correction.

Julie has been practising chiropody for over 10 years, working in EMI units (elderly mentally infirm), residential/nursing homes for the elderly, on building sites (Bovis) and with vulnerable adults. Julie is currently undertaking a course in therapeutic/sports massage at Sheffield.
