Studio Pilates

PILATES

Far more than a recent fitness craze, the Pilates Method has been developed and practised since the 1920's when Joseph and Clara Pilates  opened their Body Conditioning Gym in New York City. Originally devised to be performed on specialised Pilates Apparatus, Pilates developed his unique system of conditioning to help rehabilitate those injured in the First World War.

While some of this work has now been adapted to be performed in a Matwork setting, Studio Pilates offers a profoundly multi-dimensional approach and greatly increased individual attention which can be given in a one-to-one or small group environment.

STUDIO PILATES

Individual sessions and classes are taught in a specially equipped, dedicated Pilates studio either on a one-to-one basis or in very small groups (up to 3) and last 60 minutes.

Clients work on large, specialised pieces of apparatus - the Reformer, Trapeze Table (Cadillac), Ladder Barrel and Wunda Chair. This equipment is used to provide resistance to challenge as well as to provide support for your body, as required.

Your teacher, Magdalen Hardy, will assess your requirements and then adapt the studio and tailor the course of work given, to suit your individual needs.

In order to progress, clients would benefit from three or four weekly sessions to establish the work. They may then choose to come for sessions weekly, fortnightly, monthly or just occasionally depending on their own personal requirements and circumstances.

Magdalen will continue to develop your programme, ensuring you are progressing appropriately and in line with your desired objectives.

Born in Manchester, and raised in the beautiful north Derbyshire Peak District countryside at the foot of Kinder Scout, Magdalen is a former professional dancer, who comes from a background steeped in the Arts, with a ‘cellist mother, a father who was Principal Bassoon player with the Hallé Orchestra and a sister who is an opera singer with the English National Opera.

Magdalen undertook her professional ballet training in London before being lucky enough to embark on a career which led her to work as a performer, choreographer, teacher, lecturer and artistic director and with many and varied touring dance companies as well as in schools, colleges and with numerous and diverse groups of people. She has worked with renowned Birmingham Royal Ballet, London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Janet Smith & Dancers, Nexus and Motionhouse as well as teaching professional students at Trinity Laban College in London before becoming Lecturer in Dance at University College, Suffolk and, later, Dance Director at the College of West Anglia in the East of England.

From early in her dance career The Pilates Method has always been an important and integral part of Magdalen’s training and work and in 2003 she qualified as a Clinical Pilates Matwork Teacher after a year-long course with the highly respected Pilates Foundation. Magdalen developed her expertise further by completing a rigorous two year training programme to become a Comprehensive Pilates Studio Trainer in 2013 at London’s prestigious W2 Pilates Clinic under the tutelage of some of the world’s most renowned and respected practitioners.

Magdalen worked as an integral part of the team at Cambridge’s busy Physical Therapy Centre for nine years, where she developed her deep interest in collaborative remedial and rehabilitative work which she continues to use as her primary focus with her studio clients. Her special interest in anatomy, dynamic physiology and continuing training have enabled Magdalen’s work and commitment to Pilates to evolve alongside the latest anatomical research and Pilates-related findings through working with many pre-eminent specialists in their fields, more notably, Real Isacowitz, Alan Herdman, Mari-Jose Blom, Gary Carter and James Earls.

Magdalen’s approach to Pilates work is sensitive, considered and non-competitive and she places great value upon the unique, individual focus and mutual learning processes each client brings.

Having recently returned to live in the Peak District, Magdalen is delighted to be an integral part of the team at Holywell Healthcare and to be able to share the other practitioners' amazing skills and expertise.
